The positive developments in the Romanian-Greek bilateral economic relations as well as the concrete actions for diversification thereof were the main topics on the agenda of the talks the State Secretary Gabriela Mihaela Voicilă within the Ministry of Business Environment, Commerce had with officials from the central and local Greek institutions, during a working visit from 2-8 May 2018 in the Hellenic Republic.
The Romanian dignitary met Ioannis Brachos, Secretary General for International Economic Affairs within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Panagiotis Kourouplis, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Island Policy, the leadership of Enterprise Greece (EG), a governmental agency for promoting foreign trade and investment, the Greece-Romania Friendship Group within the Hellenic Republic Parliament, the Vice Governor of the Central Greece Region, the President of the Evia Chamber of Commerce, as well as the leaders of the main Romanians associations settled in Greece.
During the meetings with the Hellenic officials, the Romanian State Secretary presented the performances of the Romanian economy and pointed out the attractiveness of the investment and business environment in Romania and the opportunities it offers for the intensification of mutual trade and investment exchanges.
The dialogue partners expressed their satisfaction with the positive developments in bilateral economic relations and agreed a series of actions aimed at contributing to the further expansion and deepening thereof.
The Romanian official also had meetings with representatives of the business community and the Romanian community in Greece, wherein projects aimed at maintaining the Romanian identity were explored, as well as opportunities to start business under the bilateral relationship. The meetings also served to inform the Romanian business community in Greece of the facilities created by the Ministry’s programs to support Entrepreneurship, thus analyzing the possibilities and advantages of repatriation.
Background information
Greece is one of the major economic partners of Romania, both in commercial terms and economic cooperation and investments made in our country.
In 2017, Romanian products exports and the volume of bilateral trade recorded the highest values in the history of Romanian-Greek relations (895.0 million Euros, respectively 1.775.8 million Euros). Romania is the 9th destination market for goods from Greece and the 6th in the EU Member States (EU MS). At the same time, Romania is the 9th exporter on the Greek market at the level of the EU MS, being ranked in front of other states such as the V-4 members (Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia).
The size of the bilateral relationship is also due to the investments Greek companies make in Romania; more than 700 trading companies, with an invested capital of approximately 1.8 billion Euros are registered in Romania.
